The researchers proposed that oxidative breakdown of certain omega-7 unsaturated fatty acids on the skin could contribute to formation of 2-nonenal. Why can 2-nonenal become more noticeable with age?
Skin changes throughout life. The balance of surface oils, fatty acids, moisture, and antioxidant activity does not remain exactly the same from our twenties through our sixties, seventies, and beyond.
One useful way to understand the process is:
- Natural lipids sit on the skin. These oily substances are part of the skin’s normal surface barrier.
- Some lipids undergo oxidation. Oxygen and other reactive processes can break down certain unsaturated fatty acids.
- Volatile odor compounds can form. One of those compounds can be 2-nonenal.

Is 2-nonenal the same thing as sweat?

That distinction matters because simply showering more aggressively is not necessarily the answer. Mature skin can also become drier and more sensitive, so harsh scrubbing or repeated washing may leave the skin uncomfortable without addressing the bigger routine.
